Baki Reading Order: Six Series, 154 Volumes and One Long Line

The reading order is easier than the naming suggests. There are six series and no reboots and no alternate timelines: Grappler Baki (42 volumes), Baki or New Grappler Baki (31), Baki Hanma or Son of Ogre (37), Baki-Dou from 2014 (22), Baki-Dou from 2018 (17), and the ongoing Baki Rahen, which began in late 2023 and had reached about chapter 67 by mid-2026. Every entry continues the previous one, so skipping forward means losing the established hierarchy of who can beat whom.

The version problem is severe and worth stating clearly. Official English coverage stops early: the original series is being released in print, the second series is available digitally, and the last three - including everything currently running - have no official English edition. There is also a real trap with the fourth and fifth series, which share a title in speech and are separated in English only by a hyphen.

Where a newcomer should start depends on how they arrived. The Netflix anime begins with the second series and skips the original entirely, so viewers who continue from the show can safely start at chapter one of Baki-Dou, the 2014 series. Manga-first readers should start at the beginning. Be warned about content: this is deliberately excessive - graphic injury, medical horror and absurd anatomy - and the tone is closer to comedy than drama.

Baki is the rare long franchise where the obstacle to entry is bureaucracy rather than quality. The story is linear, the arcs are self-contained enough to pause between, and the escalation is the entire appeal: each series invents a more extreme opponent and then treats the resulting fight with total seriousness. The current series has shifted focus to the protagonist's half-brother, a sensible way to keep a thirty-year-old premise alive. What holds English readers back is availability: much of the franchise cannot be read legally in English at all.
